About the project
A 180 m² apartment in the historic centre, fully renovated for a couple with years of experience in interior design. No affectation or fuss: considered work with space, proportion, subtle colour, and quality materials.
Client request
The clients, an accomplished couple with refined taste and their own experience of interiors, took their time choosing a studio for the complete renovation of the apartment they had lived in for years. Their main request: restraint in contemporary solutions, without excess decoration. The 180 m² apartment stands in a quiet part of the historic centre, in a low-rise building with bay windows and solid, characterful architecture. The task was a demanding and intriguing one: an interior for people who have genuinely seen a great deal.
Challenge
The clients are a couple who have worked in interiors for more than 25 years, people with a very well-trained eye and a taste of their own. The brief was restraint in contemporary solutions, without affectation or fuss. The difficulty was to build, through a complete reconstruction of a 180 m² apartment, an enveloping, elegant and unshowy space out of nuances: clean proportions, clean lines and subtle colour, with the accents held by light and texture.
Concept
The concept rests on subtle colour and clean proportions: no loud accents, only measured lines, quiet textures and good light. The living room is built around the fireplace and the artworks, which sets an unhurried, contemplative mood. The bathroom has large-format porcelain with a Calacatta pattern and a window that keeps a living connection with the street. The master bedroom takes in the balcony: the new openings are finished in frosted glass matching the internal doors.
Result
The result is a calm, enveloping interior in a warm neutral palette, built on nuances. Clean proportions and lines, marble textures, soft light and works of art set an atmosphere of unhurried contemplation. The fireplace and the restrained furniture in the living room, the bay window in the study, the spare kitchen-dining and the marble bathroom add up to one coherent, high-end space in which opulence is read in the quality of the materials rather than in the decoration.

01 Zone
Living room
The living room is kept in a warm neutral palette: a fluted panel conceals a linear electric fire, and a soft modular sofa with armchairs on slender legs make a calm group for sitting. A round coffee table in a copper shade, an abstract work on the wall and dried pampas grass place the accents without disturbing the nuanced colour of the contemporary scheme.
02 Zone
Entrance hall
The entrance hall sets the scale for the whole 180 m² apartment: large-format marble with a golden vein on the floor, concealed doors flush with the wall and a caramel bench by the door read as the first scene of the project. Beside it is a generous dressing room with walnut-veneered storage and separate niches for shoes and accessories: order begins on the threshold.
03 Zone
Home office
Not every home office can boast a bay window of its own. We made the most of the symmetry we were given and kept the working area calm, so that nothing breaks concentration. The room can also serve as a guest bedroom: it has a sofa bed and a generous cupboard.
04 Zone
Kitchen-dining room
The kitchen-dining area is flooded with natural light from bay windows overlooking green space. Marble flooring with greenish veining, handleless facades and warm curtains set a calm, elegant tone. An oval dining table with soft chairs and a sculptural pendant light make the zone both formal and welcoming at once.
05 Zone
Bedroom
The bedroom is conceived as a quiet rest space in a warm beige-caramel palette. Hidden perimeter ceiling lighting, soft headboard and heavy rugs create a sense of shelter. An armchair by the window and a mirror in a brass frame complete a restrained yet welcoming composition.
06 Zone
Bathroom
The bathroom is clad entirely in white marble with a strong vein, which gives a sense of pure opulence. A curved crescent of light behind the mirror becomes the graphic accent and softens the room. A freestanding bath, a wall-hung unit with a stone top and warm shelved niches keep the bathroom calm and considered.

We work the cost out after the brief and the measurements. This apartment has six zones: living room, entrance hall, home office, kitchen-dining, bedroom and bathroom. Fewer zones than in a large family's apartment, but a compact set means more can go into working each room out in detail.
How long will designing a 180 m² apartment with a study take?
Approximately 4.5 months with a baseline of 2.5–3 months per 100 m². The space here is 180 m² — while there are only six zones, the study and kitchen-dining area require separate attention to lighting and bespoke furniture, extending the timeline towards the upper range.
How do you fit a home office into an apartment without compromising the living room?
In this apartment the study was placed away from the living room, closer to the entrance hall, so that work calls do not cross the sitting area. The kitchen and dining area were joined into one space, so that cooking and the shared table did not need a room each, and the metres freed up went to the bedroom and the bathroom.
What is included in an interior design project for a 180 m² contemporary-style apartment?

No. Contemporary is about the logic of form and material, not about compulsory minimalism. In this apartment the kitchen-dining and the living room were given a warm palette and textured materials rather than a sterile white; the style was fitted to how the family actually lives, not to a fashionable picture.
