Walk-in wardrobe interior: a project that starts with an inventory

The contents are worked out before the doors are drawn

With a walk-in wardrobe, the first step isn't choosing the doors or the finish but taking an inventory: how many metres of rail for long items and how many for short ones, how many shelves for jumpers and how many drawers for small things, where the suitcases go and the seasonal things needed only a few times a year. Only after this calculation is the storage carcass designed; otherwise the wardrobe looks good in a visualisation but turns out cramped in practice, once someone tries to hang the owner's actual clothes in it.

A shelf's depth matters more than its width

The standard shelf depth for a neatly folded item in a showroom display and the depth needed for a real stack of clothes fresh from the wash are two different figures, and a walk-in wardrobe design allows for the second, not the first. Drawers for underwear and small items get full-extension runners, so the contents at the back are visible and within reach rather than lost deep inside the unit, where no one looks for months.

Ventilation and light: the things people remember too late

A closed walk-in wardrobe with little air circulation and a lot of fabric inside tends to pick up odours that would simply air out of an open wardrobe, which is why we plan ventilation into the design from the start rather than adding it later. Light with accurate colour rendering matters just as much: under cold or colour-distorting light, clothes look different from how they'll look outdoors, and you notice it on the way out of the house, not in front of the mirror inside.

The light and the mirror are placed for getting dressed, not for the camera

In a walk-in wardrobe the mirror usually goes where you're already fully dressed: by the door, not in among the rails, so you don't judge the outfit piece by piece. The light at the mirror comes from the side or the front, not only from above, for the same reason as in a bathroom: overhead light casts shadows that distort how a garment really fits.
