Hallway interior design

The hallway is where everything that shouldn't get further into the home is stopped: water, grit, de-icing salt. That shapes its materials: a hard-wearing heated floor, walls that can take knocks, and a place for wet shoes and coats kept visually apart from the rest of the space.

Its second job is storage: outerwear for each season, shoes, a pram or bicycle, a place for bags and keys by the door. The images show that in our projects this is usually a built-in system rather than freestanding furniture: the hallway tends to be the narrowest room in the home, and every centimetre that sticks out is noticeable.

And the light: a hallway usually has little or no daylight, so its lighting shapes your first impression of the home.

Hallway interior: the first room you enter, often without a window

Storage is measured by belongings, not by metres of wall

In a hallway, the amount of built-in storage is worked out from the size of the household and its seasonal belongings: how many jackets are in use at once in each season, whether long coats need their own hanging rail, where a pram or bicycle goes, if the family has one. The shoe cabinet is designed with a closed section and an open one: shoes worn every day should be reachable without opening a door, while seasonal footwear goes further back. A shelf for keys, bags and small things by the entrance is one of the few places in a home where a few centimetres decide whether the hallway stays tidy or quickly becomes cluttered after moving in.

Wet shoes and coats stay apart from the rest of the home, if only visually

The hallway takes the water, grit and de-icing salt brought in from outside, so the design includes a hard-wearing area by the door and a clear transition to the rest of the home, marked by the floor colour, a threshold or a change of material. This doesn't have to be a wall or a partition: sometimes a different tile pattern or a mat set flush into the floor is enough to make the boundary clear without taking up space in an already tight room.

Where daylight is limited, lighting makes the first impression

A hallway most often has no window, and all its light is artificial from morning to evening; it's the one room in the home where daylight can't help. So the lighting here is worked out with particular care: the light by the mirror at the entrance is placed so it doesn't distort your skin tone before you go out, and the main lighting is warm enough that the hallway doesn't greet you with harsh, office-style light when you come in from the cold.

The materials carry the wear of a narrow corridor

The hallway is usually the narrowest room in a home, and every centimetre of furniture that sticks out is noticed immediately, which is why cupboards here are more often built flush into a recess than freestanding. The floor is chosen to be hard-wearing and is often heated: shoes and coats bring cold and damp in from outside, and underfloor heating helps the entrance dry out quickly after wet or cold weather.
