About the project

A 110 m² apartment for a couple with an active life. The interior brings together contemporary technology, classical finishes and vintage pieces: elegant and at the same time alive, and true to the character of the people who live there.

Client request

A couple with wide interests, well travelled and with good taste. They needed a 110 m² apartment where everything has its place: generous storage that does not make the rooms feel tight, a large kitchen for cooking, a proper home study, and a guest room that can later become a child's room.

Challenge

The main difficulty was fitting in generous storage without weighing down 110 m². The wardrobes were disguised as decorative walls with mouldings, the corridor was taken into the living areas and the loggia into the living room, which made room for a full master bedroom and a generous dining area.

Concept

Eclecticism without chaos: contemporary technology sits alongside classical mouldings and vintage accents. Every room is resolved in its own way: a concealed wardrobe in the entrance hall, a master bedroom extended into the corridor, a kitchen with the loggia added to it. Decorative and functional decisions work as one environment rather than competing with each other.

Result

The result is an apartment both elegant and vivid, where contemporary technology lives happily with classical mouldings and vintage accents. Concealed wardrobes, a master bedroom with its own bathroom, a kitchen and living room joined to the loggia: every space works for the way this couple live.

Entrance hall

In the entrance hall the task was to set aside a large amount of storage and still keep a sense of air. We designed a generous wardrobe whose door is disguised as part of a decorative wall with mouldings. The long brass handles of the cupboard answer the Gramercy Home light that holds the centre of the composition. Graphic floor tiles are combined with designer furniture, and a LULU space console brings in the atmosphere of eclectic French interiors.

02 Zone

Bedroom

We were able to extend the space into the corridor and place a generous storage area by the entrance. That gave a full master bedroom with its own wardrobe and separate bathroom. The bright accent, and a piece of art in its own right, is the well-known Zeppelin light by Flos, designed by Marcel Wanders.

Bathroom

The master bathroom came out small but comfortable and well provided for. Light walls in the shower area lift the darker tones and floral prints around the basin. At the clients' wish we left out a full bath; the shower area still found room for comfortable seating and storage.

04 Zone

Guest room

In time the room is to change status: from guest bedroom to a child's room. The design therefore put a child's convenience first. A writing desk with storage sits by the window and a built-in cupboard by the door. The rest of the room can be rearranged once a child arrives.

05 Zone

Guest bathroom

The second bathroom takes a full bath with a shower column. The room came out sunny and warm. Pale tiles and bright wallpaper are a good way to start the morning.

06 Zone

Home office

The owner works from home at all hours; the home office needed to serve both work and rest equally. Beyond a comfortable sofa bed and desk, we integrated a cabinet divided into three sections: a small wardrobe, book storage, and a mini-bar.

07 Zone

Utility room

A separate utility room took on all the household routines: laundry, ironing and storage. A compact but well-thought-out layout frees the living rooms of a function they do not need.

08 Zone

Kitchen-living room

The owners like to cook and spend a lot of time in the kitchen, so the units were designed to hold as much as possible. To keep a spacious sitting area, the loggia was joined to the living room. Italian woven chairs and a brass light hold the centre of the dining area, and graphic tiles set the rhythm of the whole space.

What is included in an eclectic apartment design project?

Eclecticism gathers pieces of very different spirit into one space, so the project includes a detailed concept for each zone separately; here there were eight of them, from the entrance hall and the home office to the utility room and the kitchen-living room. Without a clear scheme of materials and furniture, eclecticism turns into a jumble.

How long does design of a 110 m² apartment take?

A project of this size takes about three months, given eight zones including the guest room and the utility room. The programme stretches if the furniture selection changes along the way, or if new zones are added after the layout has been agreed.

What is the cost of designing an apartment with a guest room and a home office?

We put the cost estimate together after the measured survey: a guest room and a home office are extra zones beyond a standard layout, so there is more design work. Here the calculation covered eight zones, including the guest bathroom and the utility room.

How do you combine different styles in one apartment without creating clutter?

We hold to one common logic, the colour of the floor, the type of lighting or the finish material, and run it through every room, leaving the variety to furniture and décor. In this project that background decision made it easy to combine eight zones with quite different purposes.

Is a utility room a mandatory part of an apartment design?

No, it is an option added according to floor area and the needs of the family. In this 110 m² apartment the utility room went into the project together with the logic of the wardrobes; things like this are discussed at the brief, not added on afterwards.

Can you commission ARTEVRIKA for the design project alone, without the renovation?
